Range Rover GT: an electric grand tourer beyond the traditional SUV formula

Вопросы и ответы

Its name, purpose and initial details were officially revealed on July 22, 2026. A full presentation of the production vehicle had not yet taken place at that time.

The first version will have a fully electric powertrain. The EMA architecture is expected to support a full HEV hybrid later, but the timing and market availability have not been specified.

Production will take place at JLR’s plant in Halewood, Merseyside, United Kingdom.

On July 22, 2026, Range Rover officially unveiled the GT, the fifth standalone model in the family. The car is still shown in camouflage, but the manufacturer has already revealed its purpose, general proportions, interior features, powertrain type and production location.

The Range Rover GT is not intended to be another version of an existing SUV. The brand is creating a lower vehicle with a coupe-like roof, designed primarily for long-distance travel on paved roads. At the same time, the development team promises to retain capabilities that are usually absent from conventional grand tourers.

The Range Rover GT will launch as a fully electric model, while the platform will later allow a full-hybrid version to be introduced. Power output, battery capacity, range and price have not yet been announced.

What Range Rover unveiled on July 22, 2026

In the official Range Rover announcement, the new vehicle is described as the fifth model in the family. The lineup currently includes the full-size Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque.

The GT will occupy a separate position in the lineup. Its concept focuses on long-distance comfort, composed high-speed driving and more car-like proportions. The manufacturer describes it as the closest to a passenger car of any Range Rover ever created.

The GT name defines the model's positioning. A grand tourer is designed for extended journeys, combining performance with comfort for the driver and passengers. Such cars usually have a low body, a spacious cabin and a powerful powertrain. Range Rover is attempting to apply this formula to a vehicle with increased ground clearance and the ability to leave paved roads.

Key facts about the Range Rover GT

  • officially announced on July 22, 2026;

  • will become the fifth model in the Range Rover family;

  • will be built on the new EMA architecture;

  • the first version will have a fully electric powertrain;

  • a full HEV hybrid is planned for future EMA-based vehicles;

  • production will take place at JLR's plant in Halewood, United Kingdom;

  • prototypes are already undergoing final road testing;

  • the company will disclose additional specifications later in 2026.

Why the Range Rover GT is not a conventional SUV

The camouflage hides the body details but not its main proportions. The prototype has a noticeably lower roof than the brand's traditional models, an elongated profile and a smoothly tapering rear section. The wheelbase appears long, while the passenger cabin is positioned in the tradition of classic GT cars.

This does not mean that Range Rover is abandoning its familiar practicality. The company promises to combine a car-like seating position and handling with capabilities unavailable in traditional grand tourers. Specific ground-clearance figures, wading depth and off-road modes have not yet been disclosed.

According to Autocar, the new model will be closer in length to the Range Rover Sport but noticeably lower. The publication also reports that the GT is not being considered as a direct replacement for the Range Rover Velar. In its official release on July 22, the company does not describe the new model as the successor to any existing vehicle.

The Range Rover GT expands the model range rather than replacing one of the brand's current SUVs. This is an important distinction: buyers are being offered a separate body style and character, not simply an electric version of the Velar or Sport.

The EMA platform and electric powertrain

The Range Rover GT will be the brand's first model based on the EMA architecture, or Electrified Modular Architecture. The platform was developed for JLR's next generation of electrified vehicles.

On June 17, 2026, the company clarified its strategy and announced an expanded range of powertrains for future EMA models. The GT will initially be launched as a battery-electric vehicle, or BEV. Later in the architecture's lifecycle, it should become possible to use a full HEV hybrid system.

In this context, HEV should not be confused with a plug-in hybrid, or PHEV. The manufacturer is referring specifically to a full hybrid that can recharge a small traction battery while driving and does not require a connection to an external power source. The technical layout of the future GT hybrid version has not yet been shown.

The number of electric motors, all-wheel-drive configuration, system operating voltage, maximum power and charging speed have not been revealed. It is therefore too early to compare the GT with production electric rivals by the numbers.

What will change inside the cabin

Alongside the camouflaged prototype, Range Rover showed the new model's interior for the first time. The dashboard uses a horizontal layout with a minimal number of visible elements.

A single large screen is mounted in the center, while the driver has a separate compact display instead of a traditional instrument cluster. The climate-system air vent is concealed and runs across almost the entire width of the dashboard.

The trim uses a woven material covering a substantial part of the dashboard. Speakers are integrated into it, allowing the audio system to preserve the interior's overall visual pattern. The company says it aimed to reduce not only conventional noise but also visual clutter: buttons, speaker grilles and individual technological elements have been deliberately concealed.

Space in the second row was one of the priorities. Range Rover claims best-in-class rear legroom, although exact cabin dimensions have not yet been published.

A low roofline usually reduces headroom, but the manufacturer says the shape of the door openings and the layout of the electric platform will allow for a comfortable seating position. This can only be verified once the production vehicle appears.

Where the Range Rover GT will be built

Production of the new model will be based at JLR's plant in Halewood, Merseyside. The factory also builds the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport.

On September 26, 2024, JLR announced a £500 million investment in modernizing Halewood. By the time of the announcement, £250 million had already been invested in retooling the facility.

The site was expanded by 32,364 m², new electric-vehicle assembly lines were installed, and equipment for fitting high-voltage batteries and 750 autonomous robots was added. The final production line was extended from four to six kilometers to adapt it for traction-battery installation.

At the same time, the plant is designed to build vehicles with internal-combustion engines, hybrids and electric powertrains in parallel. This arrangement reflects JLR's updated strategy: the company retains the ability to adjust the mix of powertrains according to demand in different markets.

How the Range Rover GT will differ from the Range Rover Electric

The brand is preparing two different electric directions that are easy to confuse. The Range Rover Electric is an electric version of the full-size flagship SUV. It retains the familiar tall body, the MLA platform and the core concept of the conventional Range Rover.

The GT is a separate model on a different architecture. It has a lower body, a coupe-like profile and a clear focus on long-distance travel on paved roads. Despite sharing the same brand name, the vehicles are designed for different use cases.

  • Range Rover Electric — an electric version of the traditional full-size SUV;

  • Range Rover GT — a standalone electric grand tourer with crossover elements;

  • Range Rover Sport Electric — a more dynamic version of the familiar performance-oriented SUV.

What the GT means for Range Rover

The new model shows that Range Rover no longer wants to limit itself to different versions of the same SUV format. The company is entering a segment where long-distance capability, quietness, a spacious cabin and confident driving on different types of roads matter more than maximum body height and off-road geometry.

Even so, it is too early to draw final conclusions about the GT's capabilities. The manufacturer has not yet published the key figures used to assess an electric vehicle: range, charging speed, power and weight.

The next stage of the project should clarify how closely Range Rover has come to the traditional grand tourer formula and which qualities of a conventional SUV the new model has retained.
