Frequently asked questions
The Smart #2 retains the two-seat cabin, rear-mounted electric motor and rear-wheel drive, but gains a 35.8 kWh battery, independent five-link rear suspension and DC charging at up to 65 kW. Motor output remains 60 kW, while torque falls from 160 to 130 Nm.
The #2 supports DC charging at up to 65 kW and can charge from 10 to 80% in 20 minutes under optimal conditions. With AC charging, the Pure accepts 7.4 kW and the other European versions accept up to 11 kW, so the new #2 cannot use 22 kW from an AC station.
Pure+ adds 11 kW three-phase AC charging and a heated driver's seat. Premium offers heated seats, artificial-leather upholstery and a Sennheiser audio system. Couture Edition is based on Premium and adds special styling and an individual number; production for Europe is stated at 999 units.
On October 12, 2026, Smart unveiled the electric #2 at the Paris Motor Show. The brand has returned to a two-seat city car with a short body, rear-wheel drive and a split tailgate. Behind the familiar proportions, however, are a new ECA platform, a 35.8 kWh battery and DC charging at up to 65 kW.
In its official premiere announcement, the manufacturer calls the #2 a production model, but notes that European certification is still ongoing. The stated 290 km WLTP range is currently a target figure, not the final certified result. The data below refer to the European version and information available as of October 15, 2026.
Dimensions: a few extra centimetres, not a move into another class
The Smart #2 measures 2746 mm in Pure, Pure+ and Premium form. The previous-generation fortwo was 2695 mm long, making the difference 51 mm, or 5.1 cm. The limited #2 Couture Edition is slightly longer at 2764 mm.
The two-seat layout and short overhangs remain. The stated kerb-to-kerb turning circle is 6.95 m. These are the figures that determine how easy a small car is to use in a courtyard or car park: the ability to turn in a confined space matters more here than an increase in power.
A tailgate you can sit on
The upper glass section opens separately, which is useful when there is little space behind the car. The lower section folds down to create a loading platform. When parked, it can also be used as a seat: Smart specifies a maximum load of up to 120 kg. This is the limit for the tailgate itself, not the vehicle's payload.

What has changed compared with the electric fortwo
For the technical comparison, we are using the EQ fortwo rather than the previous model's petrol versions. The new #2 also has a rear-mounted electric motor driving the rear wheels, but its battery is considerably larger. The chassis has changed as well, with an independent five-link rear suspension.
Specification | Smart EQ fortwo | Smart #2 |
|---|---|---|
Length | 2695 mm | 2746 mm; Couture Edition — 2764 mm |
Stated battery capacity | 17.6 kWh | 35.8 kWh, LFP |
Electric motor output | 60 kW | 60 kW |
Torque | 160 Nm | 130 Nm |
Maximum AC charging power | 22 kW with the optional charger | 7.4 kW for Pure; up to 11 kW for the other versions |
Peak output is unchanged, while torque is lower. It would therefore be misleading to describe the #2 as a more powerful successor. The main changes concern the battery, charging capability and equipment. The two capacity figures also cannot be used to calculate the exact increase in real-world range; comparable testing would be needed for that.
Charging: why the new 65 kW does not replace the old 22 kW
The #2 is claimed to support DC charging at up to 65 kW, taking the battery from 10 to 80% in 20 minutes under optimal conditions. Charging time depends on battery and ambient temperature, the station's available output and other limitations. This refers specifically to the stated charging range, not charging the battery from 0 to 100%.
The picture is different at AC charging stations. The entry-level Pure has a 7.4 kW single-phase charger, while the other European versions are listed with up to 11 kW using a three-phase connection. The manufacturer's estimates for 10–80% are approximately five and three hours respectively.

A useful check before replacing your fortwo
The previous EQ fortwo was available with an optional 22 kW AC charger, as confirmed by this archived Mercedes-Benz model document. The new #2 cannot accept 22 kW from a standard AC charger, even if the station is rated for that output. Its limit is 7.4 or 11 kW, depending on the version. If you usually charge at work or at a supermarket, check the type of stations you use first: the benefit of DC charging requires different equipment.
Equipment: what you get with Pure+, Premium and Couture Edition
The #2's cabin has a 10.1-inch central display and an 8.8-inch driver's display. For comparison, when describing the updated EQ fortwo introduced in 2019, the manufacturer referred to an infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen. The new model also includes 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

In the Belgian range, even the entry-level Pure includes Smart Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go and Highway Assist. These systems support the driver but do not make the car autonomous.
Pure+ adds 11 kW three-phase AC charging and a heated driver's seat.
Premium offers heated seats, artificial-leather upholstery and a seven-speaker Sennheiser audio system.
Couture Edition includes Premium equipment, matte white paint with gold details and an individual number. Production for Europe is stated at 999 units.
Pure+'s practical advantage is clearest for drivers who regularly use three-phase AC charging. Premium mainly adds comfort. Choosing the limited edition is about its styling and rarity: no separate increase in power or target range has been announced for it.

Prices and orders: what was announced on October 13
Smart scheduled the opening of pre-orders through its European representatives for October 13, 2026. The announcement for the Belgian market lists starting prices including VAT: Pure — 19,990 euros, Pure+ — 20,990 euros, Premium — 24,490 euros and Couture Edition — 25,690 euros. Online orders are planned for the first half of 2027.
These are Belgian prices, not a single price list for every country. Timelines also need to be checked locally: for example, the UK division announced that pre-orders would open in spring 2027. The pre-order opening date is not the vehicle delivery date. The releases used here do not name an exact date for the first deliveries; the manufacturer links them to the completion of certification.
Three questions to ask before choosing a version
Are two seats enough for your usual journeys?
Where will the car charge most often: at an AC station at home or at a fast DC station?
What price, equipment level and delivery time are stated for your country?
The answers will help you judge the #2 against your everyday needs. The short body remains, but charging conditions and equipment deserve attention even from drivers who have owned a fortwo for years.
