2027 Honda Civic Type R: What Changed for Track and Daily Driving

Frequently asked questions

The updates include revised engine cooling, retuned adaptive dampers in +R mode, a pedal spring to reduce brake-pedal play, quicker Rev Match response, heated front seats, Ultrasuede trim, Google built-in, two USB-C ports, and an auto-dimming mirror.

No. The engine remains a 1,996 cm³ unit rated at 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, with a six-speed manual transmission as the only option.

The listed TSRP is $49,990, including a $1,295 destination charge but excluding taxes, registration, and additional dealer charges. Premium paint adds $455.

On October 1, 2026, Honda unveiled the updated 2027 Civic Type R for the US market. The main changes focus on engine cooling, suspension behavior in +R mode and cabin equipment. Power remains unchanged, while the six-speed manual transmission is still the only gearbox option. Heated seats are available for the first time.

In its official October 1 announcement, Honda said deliveries to US dealers were scheduled to begin in October 2026. The exact date has not been announced. These timings and the equipment described below apply to the US; sales conditions in other countries should be checked separately.

For the Track: Cooling and More Precise Control

The redesigned front end serves a functional purpose. According to Honda, the larger grille opening and reduced turbulence improve airflow to the engine, while the deeper splitter increases downforce. The company links these changes to maintaining performance during intensive track driving. The release does not provide a numerical downforce increase.

The damping has been revised in +R mode: Honda says the changes reduce body hop and harsh impacts. For the driver, the aim is to hold the chosen line more precisely over uneven surfaces. This should not be taken as proof of a softer ride in every mode, however, since the manufacturer's description applies specifically to +R.

Two other changes affect the actions taken before a corner. An additional spring in the brake-pedal mechanism reduces play, while Rev Match raises engine speed more quickly during downshifts. A change in pedal feel alone does not prove that stopping distances have been reduced; the publications reviewed contain no comparative measurements.

The engine retains its 1996 cm³ displacement, 315 hp under the SAE standard and 310 lb-ft of torque, or approximately 420 N·m. These figures are listed in the US Civic Type R specifications. The update should therefore be judged by its control and consistency under hard use, not by an increase in power.

For Daily Driving: Heat, Connectivity and Visibility

The front sport seats now feature three-stage heating. The upper section of the dashboard and the front door panels are trimmed in Ultrasuede. The auto-dimming mirror reduces glare from the headlights of vehicles behind you. These changes are useful in everyday driving, whether or not the car visits a track.

The multimedia system now includes Google built-in with Google Maps and Google Play, as well as Google Gemini and Alexa built-in. Two USB-C ports have been added to the center console. When importing a car, check whether the connected services are available in the country where it will be used: Honda notes that app compatibility and availability vary by market.

The Honda Sensing suite has also been updated. The manufacturer reports improved motorcycle and bicycle recognition by the collision mitigation system, along with revisions to adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. Post-Collision Braking has been added as well. This is a separate function designed to reduce the risk of subsequent impacts.

Two Daily-Use Limitations

The US Type R specification lists four seating positions. This matters if the car is being considered for a family of five.

The standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires in size 265/30 ZR19 are summer tires. Honda expressly states that they are not intended for winter driving. Heated seats improve comfort in cold weather, but a separate seasonal tire set will still be needed.

US Pricing: What Is Included in the $49,990 Price

Honda's pricing table dated October 1, 2026 lists two figures: a $48,695 MSRP and a $49,990 TSRP. The difference is a $1,295 destination charge. The $49,990 figure includes destination, but not taxes, registration or additional dealer charges. The actual dealer price may differ from the manufacturer's suggested price.

Exterior Color Changes the Calculation

Honda lists a $455 surcharge for premium paint. In the specifications, Meteorite Gray Metallic is a standard color, while Championship White, Sonic Gray Pearl and Boost Blue Pearl are premium colors.

For any of the three extra-cost colors, the calculation is $49,990 + $455 = $50,445 before taxes and registration. This is our calculation based on the published figures. There is no basis for automatically adding $455 to the price of a car in the standard gray color.

Who Should Consider Waiting for the Update

For buyers who want to combine track days with daily driving, the update adds specific benefits: revised +R handling, heated seats and new multimedia functions. For owners of the previous Type R, replacing the car calls for a back-to-back test drive: quoted power has not increased, and the effect of the revised settings has so far been described primarily by the manufacturer.

As of October 2, 2026, the materials reviewed contain no independent comparison of lap times or braking distances between the updated and previous cars. The US price also does not show what importing or buying the car in another country would cost. That calculation requires local taxes, delivery terms and the offer from a specific seller.
