Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680 Gets More Powerful: What Has Changed in the Flagship SUV

On July 20, 2026, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the updated 2027 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680. The flagship SUV has received a more powerful twin-turbocharged V8, revised chassis control, a new digital architecture and additional features for second-row passengers.

The update has not turned the GLS 680 into an entirely new model. The manufacturer retained the familiar platform and core concept, but significantly revised the engine, suspension, lighting, multimedia system and interior equipment. The main technical change is a new electrified V8 producing 603 hp.

When the New Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680 Was Unveiled

The update process began on March 31, 2026, when Mercedes-Benz presented the modernized GLS family at its plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The manufacturer introduced the Mercedes-Maybach version separately on July 20, 2026, during the opening of the new MANUFAKTUR personalization center in Beverly Hills.

On the official Mercedes-Benz USA page, the model is identified as the 2027 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680. The vehicle is scheduled to reach the US market in the second half of 2026. Launch timing in other countries will depend on the individual market.

New V8: More Power Without Sacrificing Smoothness

The updated 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 produces 603 hp and 850 Nm. For comparison, the previous US-market GLS 600 delivered 550 hp. The increase therefore amounts to 53 hp.

The engine works with a 48-volt integrated starter-generator. The electrical system can briefly add up to 23 hp, start the combustion engine more quickly and smooth out the powertrain’s operation during takeoff and gear changes.

Specialist publications also report a new crankshaft design and balance shafts intended to reduce vibration. Mercedes-Benz officially confirms that the engine is more powerful and smoother, but has not yet published the powertrain’s full engineering specifications.

Mercedes-Maybach has not disclosed the updated model’s 0–100 km/h acceleration time, fuel consumption or emissions figures. It is therefore too early to compare the vehicle’s performance with that of the previous GLS 600.

The Suspension Gathers Information About the Road

Standard equipment includes AIRMATIC air suspension. The GLS 680 can also be equipped with E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, which individually controls damping and suspension stiffness at each wheel.

The new chassis control system can receive information about road conditions and prepare the suspension for uneven surfaces in advance. The data is transmitted through Mercedes-Benz cloud infrastructure and can be used by other compatible vehicles that later travel along the same section of road.

The steering has also been retuned, with a more direct ratio. This should make the large SUV’s responses more precise without turning the Maybach into a sports model. Ride comfort and passenger comfort remain the main priorities.

How the New GLS 680 Looks Different

The front end is identified by a new grille with vertical slats, an illuminated outline and Maybach lettering. For the first time, the model is available with optional illumination of the three-pointed star on the hood.

The DIGITAL LIGHT headlights feature two-star elements and rose-gold decorative accents. The same motif appears in the rear lighting. The front and rear bumpers have been redesigned, while the body’s overall proportions remain unchanged.

Buyers will be offered new 22- and 23-inch wheels. On the 23-inch version, the center emblem is mounted to remain upright as the wheel rotates.

The palette now includes Dark Petrol and a two-tone combination of Dark Petrol and Verde Silver Metallic. Additional paint, leather and trim options are available through the official Mercedes-Benz MANUFAKTUR program.

Mercedes-Maybach Specialists Assemble the Interior

Mercedes-Benz says that selected GLS 680 interior elements are installed by a team of two Mercedes-Maybach specialists who trained in Germany. They work with wood trim, Nappa leather and other interior materials.

The vehicle retains a two-row layout. Removing the third row creates more space for rear passengers and allows for separate seats with a large center console.

The front multicontour seats receive a new vibration-massage program. The rear seats offer enhanced massage functions, position adjustments and footrests. Two wireless charging pads are installed in the rear of the cabin.

The GLS 680 remains a vehicle in which the second row is just as important as the driver’s seat. Equipment includes a refrigerated compartment, folding tables and individual seats, although the availability of specific options depends on the country and selected configuration.

New MB.OS-Based Multimedia System

The vehicle’s electronic systems are controlled by Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS. The platform combines multimedia, vehicle functions, cloud services and driver-assistance systems.

The dashboard houses the MBUX Superscreen, with separate areas for the instruments, central multimedia system and front passenger. The Zero Layer interface places frequently used functions on the home screen, reducing the number of menu steps.

The MBUX voice assistant supports commands phrased conversationally. The system can take the context of previous requests into account and control navigation, climate, multimedia and a range of vehicle settings.

The MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment package is available for the second row. It includes two 11.6-inch displays with integrated cameras. They can be used not only to watch video but also to participate in video conferences.

Audio and Sound Insulation

The standard Burmester 3D Surround audio system supports Dolby Atmos. The manufacturer also claims additional sound insulation for the engine and the lower part of the body.

The purpose of these changes is to reduce low-frequency noise from the powertrain and wheels. This is particularly important for second-row passengers, who are more likely to notice body vibrations and noise from the rear wheel arches.

What Driver-Assistance Systems Are Included

The electronic-assistance suite uses cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors. Equipment includes Distance Assist DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control, the MB.DRIVE ASSIST package and MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST.

These features do not make the GLS 680 a fully autonomous vehicle. The driver must monitor the road and remain in control in accordance with local operating regulations.

Where the Mercedes-Maybach GLS Is Built

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS is assembled at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The facility produces the GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS, their Mercedes-AMG versions and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS for global markets.

On March 31, 2026, the plant celebrated the production of its five-millionth vehicle and simultaneously hosted the world premiere of the updated Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS. Information about the models and production site is published on the official Mercedes-Benz Group website.

What Remains Unknown

  • the official price of the 2027 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680;

  • the cost of MANUFAKTUR packages and individual options;

  • the 0–100 km/h acceleration time;

  • top speed;

  • fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions;

  • the exact start date for sales outside the US;

  • the standard-equipment list for different markets.

Prices currently cited by automotive publications are based on the previous version’s price and the publications’ own forecasts. The manufacturer has not confirmed them.

Key Points About the Update

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680 retains the format of a large four-seat SUV but is now more powerful and more technologically advanced. The changes go beyond decorative details: the new V8 produces 603 hp, the suspension can anticipate road conditions, and MB.OS brings together the multimedia system and electronic assistants.

The update is primarily intended to improve comfort, quietness and personalization options rather than radically change the model’s character. The result can be assessed fully after the prices, certification figures and first independent tests are published.
