Hyundai Palisade returns to market after a tough safety ordeal

When technology fails

In spring 2026, the story around the Hyundai Palisade escalated from a routine model update into a serious test for the brand. The trigger was a tragedy in the US — the death of a two-year-old child linked to the operation of the third-row electric seats.

The investigation showed that the folding-seat system could respond incorrectly to the presence of a person or object. This led to urgent measures — a recall of tens of thousands of vehicles and a complete halt to sales.

Scope of the problem and Hyundai's response

Recall and sales suspension

Hyundai responded promptly:

  • around 68 500 vehicles were recalled in North America

  • an additional about 58 000 — in South Korea

  • sales of the Limited and Calligraphy trims were temporarily suspended

The company acknowledged the issue and began work on a solution while continuing to investigate the causes of the incident.

This was not an isolated case

Prior to the tragedy, incidents had already been recorded:

  • several injuries in the US

  • similar cases in South Korea

This confirmed that the problem was systemic rather than a single defect.

What was actually fixed

An update that changed the system logic

Hyundai developed a software solution that affected key functions:

  • improved detection of people and objects

  • the "one-touch" folding function was disabled

  • it now requires holding the button, not a single tap

  • folding is possible only with the rear door open

  • control via the multimedia system has been disabled

The update can be installed:

  • over the air (OTA)

  • or at a dealer

After installation, dealers were authorized to resume selling the vehicles.

Return to the market

Sales resumed

After the modifications were completed, Hyundai officially announced the resumption of sales for the 2026 Palisade.

This is an important step, given that the Palisade remains:

  • one of the brand's key SUVs

  • Hyundai's best-selling SUV in South Korea last year

Balancing convenience and safety

The cost of automation

This case served as a reminder:
even the most convenient features can carry risk if safety is not brought to an absolute level.

Automation is not only convenience but also responsibility for every detail.

Conclusion

The Hyundai Palisade story is more than a vehicle recall. It is an example of how a single technical detail can change people’s lives and affect the reputation of a global brand.

Hyundai chose transparency and swift action: halting sales, a large-scale recall, and redesigning the system. Now, returning to the market, the Palisade becomes not just an updated vehicle but a symbol of how important safety is in the world of modern technology.
