Audi A2 e-tron: What Has Been Revealed About Audi’s New Compact EV

On March 17, 2026, Audi officially announced the A2 e-tron name and confirmed that the compact electric car will make its world debut in autumn, with production based in Ingolstadt. Until the full debut, however, the model has almost no technical specification: Audi has not disclosed the battery, power output, range, or price.

This limited amount of official information may not seem like much, but it helps separate the real project from the many figures appearing in early reports. The A2 e-tron has a confirmed name, vehicle class, production city, and premiere timeframe; the rest of its specifications have not yet been provided in an official announcement.

A quick reliability check

If a description of the A2 e-tron already includes battery capacity, motor power, charging speed, range, or price, check the original source. As of August 6, 2026, Audi had not publicly announced these parameters.

What Audi has officially confirmed

In its March 17, 2026 press release, Audi describes the A2 e-tron as a new electric model family in the compact class. The company promises a world premiere in autumn 2026, says production will take place in Ingolstadt, and shows only the vehicle’s silhouette in a design sketch.

On April 23, 2026, Audi separately confirmed that preparations for A2 e-tron production in Ingolstadt were already underway. An official statement about the production network said that the launch of another electric product line at the main plant was scheduled for autumn.

Why Audi is bringing back the A2 name

The original Audi A2 made its debut at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 1999. In an anniversary article published on September 25, 2025, Audi recalls that it was a compact car with an all-aluminium body. The A2 1.2 TDI went on sale in March 2001, had an official fuel consumption figure of 2.99 l/100 km, and became the world’s first four-door “three-litre” car.

Production ended in 2005, after Audi built 176 377 cars over five years. High complexity and cost limited demand. The new name therefore does not promise a repeat of the previous aluminium construction; instead, it refers back to the idea of a compact, practical, and efficient Audi.

An interesting detail: the A2 already embodied efficiency

The A2 1.2 TDI had a kerb weight of 855 kg and a drag coefficient of 0.25. These figures apply only to the early-2000s diesel version and should not be treated as benchmarks for the future A2 e-tron.

Which specifications cannot yet be considered confirmed

At the beginning of August, automotive media published specific figures for the future model’s battery, motors, power, charging, and range. Audi has not officially confirmed them.

  • battery capacity and chemistry have not been announced;

  • power output, the number of electric motors, and the drivetrain have not been confirmed;

  • there is no certified WLTP range;

  • maximum charging power and charging time have not been published;

  • prices, trim levels, and the markets where sales will begin have not been announced.

What is known about the timeline

The project timeline is consistent. On March 17, Audi named the model and set out an autumn premiere. On April 23, the company reported that production preparations were underway. In a financial release dated July 27, 2026, it again stated that the A2 e-tron would be presented in autumn and built in Ingolstadt.

However, “autumn 2026” is not the date when the car will reach dealerships. Audi has not yet said when orders will open, which countries will get the model first, or how much it will cost. Until those announcements are made, it would be premature to compare the A2 e-tron with specific competitors on price or range.

What this means for buyers

The A2 e-tron is of interest as a future compact Audi electric car, with the brand highlighting urban practicality and efficiency as priorities. The practical approach is to wait for the official premiere and check the range of the chosen version, its fast-charging power, dimensions, prices in the target market, and battery warranty terms.

The Audi A2 e-tron is a confirmed future model, but it is not yet a car with a final specification.
