Audi Q9: Audi’s Biggest SUV Yet Begins With the Interior

Audi has finally let the Q9 step into the light — but not in the usual way. There are no power figures, no dramatic lap-time promises, and no full exterior reveal yet. Instead, Audi started with the place where owners will actually spend their time: the cabin.
That says a lot about what the Q9 is meant to be. This is not just another large SUV with four rings on the grille. It is Audi’s first large full-size SUV, a new flagship designed around space, comfort, technology and the kind of quiet luxury that matters on long journeys, airport runs, family trips and executive drives.
“With the Q9, ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ is increasingly defined by the in-car experience.”
— Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi Audi will fully reveal the Q9 in summer 2026. The global Audi MediaCenter keeps the timing broad, while Audi USA gives the more precise date: July 28, 2026.
The story so far
On May 12, 2026, Audi published an official first look at the Q9 interior through Audi MediaCenter. The Danish Audi site followed with a local version on May 13. Audi also released a media album with 16 images, most of them showing the cabin: front sport seats, digital displays, second-row individual seats, panoramic roof, center console, trunk rail system and interior design sketches.
later published new renderings of the Q9’s exterior. Those images are useful for understanding how independent designers are reading the teasers and prototypes, but they should not be treated as official Audi photos. itself frames the technical side cautiously, noting that confirmed specifications are still missing.

Why the Q9 matters
Audi has had large SUVs before. The Q7 has long been the practical three-row choice, while the Q8 has played the role of stylish flagship crossover. But the Q9 is different. It is Audi’s first real answer to the full-size luxury SUV class — the territory of models like the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Cadillac Escalade.
That timing is important. Audi is refreshing its product lineup after a difficult market period, and the company has openly said the Q9 is aimed at customers in North America. In the first quarter of 2026, Audi reported that North American deliveries excluding Mexico fell by 27%, and the company linked the decline partly to U.S. tariffs and the end of electric-car subsidies. The Q9 is meant to strengthen Audi’s premium SUV lineup in that exact market.
Reuters adds another layer: the Q9 is produced at Audi’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia, which could make it vulnerable to higher U.S. import tariffs if proposed measures are imposed. Audi CFO Jürgen Rittersberger said such tariffs would place a “significant burden” on the company.
The cabin is the headline
Audi is clearly trying to make the Q9 feel less like a big machine and more like a private lounge. The official message is not about horsepower. It is about space, calm, light, sound and convenience.

Six seats for comfort, seven seats for family life
The Q9 will be available with either six or seven seats. The six-seat layout gives the second row two individual electric seats with active ventilation — the kind of setup Audi compares to business-class travel. The seven-seat version is more family-focused: all three seats in the second row can take child seats, and the third-row seatbacks fold electrically and individually.
That small detail matters. Many luxury SUVs claim to be family cars, but not all of them make everyday family use easy. Audi seems to understand that a flagship SUV has to work not only on a brochure page, but also in a supermarket parking lot with children, luggage and a stroller.
Electric doors: showpiece or real convenience?
For the first time in an Audi, all doors can be operated electrically. They can be opened or closed via the key, the myAudi app, the MMI system, the brake pedal or the seatbelt buckle. Audi also says the doors use surrounding sensors to detect obstacles, tight parking spaces, cyclists and other road users.
This is the kind of feature that could easily sound like a gimmick. But in a vehicle this large, it may become one of the Q9’s most useful daily conveniences. Wide doors are great until the parking space is narrow. Electric control and obstacle detection could make a big SUV feel less clumsy in real life.
The panoramic roof is more than a window
The standard panoramic sunroof measures around 1.5 square meters. It can open wide, and its laminated safety glass includes nine individually controllable segments that can switch from transparent to opaque. Audi says the glass reflects infrared light and blocks more than 99.5% of UV radiation. When the vehicle is parked, the roof automatically turns opaque.
In the top trim level, the roof also becomes part of the lighting design: 84 LEDs can illuminate it in one of 30 colors. It is not just a sunroof anymore; it is part of the cabin atmosphere.
Light, sound and a little theatre
Audi’s updated Bang & Olufsen premium sound system brings 4D sound into the Q9. The setup includes headrest speakers and actuators in the front seats, so music is not only heard but physically felt. Audi also connects the audio experience with its interior lighting: the interaction light can sync with the rhythm of the music and match the color mood of the track’s cover art. This is where the Q9 starts to feel like Audi is chasing something more emotional. The brand built its reputation on clean design, precision and technology. With the Q9, it is trying to make that technology feel warmer and more personal.

Materials: less gloss, more calm
Audi says the Q9 interior will use a wider selection of premium materials, including alpaca-fiber wool, Dinamica microfiber, leather, leatherette blends, fine Nappa leather, natural ash, lime-structure wood and carbon-fiber trim with basalt-gray accents. The company also says it has reduced glossy surfaces in favor of matte and textured materials.
That is a smart move. Gloss-black plastic looks expensive in photos for about five minutes. Then it collects dust, fingerprints and scratches. A flagship SUV should age gracefully, and Audi appears to know it.
Practical details that should not be ignored
The redesigned center console includes two Qi2.2 wireless charging pads, allowing two smartphones to charge at the same time. USB-C ports can deliver up to 100 watts. In the trunk, Audi has added an aluminum rail system with sliding hooks and adjustable anchors, designed to secure cargo without taking over the load floor.
These features are not as dramatic as electric doors or a glowing panoramic roof, but they may be just as important in daily use. A luxury SUV that cannot handle phones, bags and luggage properly is not really luxurious.
What about the exterior?
This is where the story gets more careful.
Audi has not yet fully revealed the production exterior of the Q9. The official media album includes one exterior studio image related to the power doors, but the main focus remains the interior.
has published exterior renderings based on available teasers and prototype sightings. According to its interpretation, the Q9 may follow Audi’s newer design language with rounded surfacing, split lighting, a large grille and dramatic rear lights. But these details are not final confirmed specifications from Audi.

What Audi has not told us yet
The most important missing details are still under wraps.
Audi has not officially confirmed:
engine lineup;
power output;
hybrid or plug-in hybrid versions;
dimensions;
weight;
fuel economy;
electric range, if a PHEV is offered;
prices;
trim levels;
market-by-market launch dates.
expects a wide range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, possibly with six- and eight-cylinder engines. That may sound plausible for a large luxury SUV, but it remains speculation until Audi publishes the data.
